How did I get started with www.SweetgumLife.com?

It all began when I read a novel about life in the south. “I can do that!” I thought to myself. I have lived in Alabama all of my life. I have kept a journal since I was 14 years old.

So I decided to write about growing up in Alabama and began blogging in March 2013.

I named the blog, www.theWriteSteph.com because…well, because my name is Stephanie and I’m a freelance writer.

I really enjoyed going through our old family photos and posting stories from my experience growing up in rural south Alabama. But after about a year, I kinda ran out of material. Like one of my friends said, “Well, you eventually grew up. And that was that.”

So I began branching out and posting about just life in the south and life from a mom/wife POV.

I realized right away that I wanted a better way to organize my posts. I wanted a menu/nav bar but learned that free WordPress only offered so many amenities.

Back in August, I took the plunge and bought a self-hosted site. For about a month or longer I brainstormed names for my blog. Then I asked some good friends and family to help me decide which in my top 10 to go with.

Previously, in June 2016, my family and I moved to a house surrounded by sweetgum trees. That’s how I eventually came up with Sweetgum Life. IMHO, a Sweetgum Life is sweet, but (like everyone’s life) can get sticky. But even the hard times can be sweet if you have a strong faith in a Deliverer and a loving family.

I hope you’ll all enjoy my little blog pieces that I scratch out for your enjoyment. I hope that you’ll learn something, and I truly hope that you’ll find some encouragement from this regular gal’s Sweetgum Life.

May God bless you richly,

Stephanie L. Robertson

  1. Your sweet Mom, has invited me to read your blogs & I have enjoyed them. So now I’m looking forward to your new adventure. By The Way…my grandson, Chance helped a friend rake & bag about 40 big black bags of sweet gum balls from her yard last year & he wouldn’t call them so SWEET!! HA!

Will be waiting on your next blog.

    • Hi Kaye,
Thank you for your kind words!
My hubs says that there’s a machine that you can buy at the tune of about $300 that can suck them up for us. Not sweet! 😉

  2. Your new space looks fantastic. I’m see interesting articles with a lot of variety. The DYI, faith and family are my favorites! Good luck! So proud of you.

    • Oh Beverly,
That’s so sweet! Yes, I must say that Princess Buttercup is very precious to her dad and me. She keeps us entertained!
      Warmest regards,

  3. Stephanie, you have the right stuff for The Sweetgum Life❣
I always enjoy reading your posts & they usually end with a smile on my face. You have a wonderful talent for arranging decor, photographing interesting treasures & capturing your readers attention with your Southern speech & whimsical but fancy way of telling a story or sharing a one of a kind find or just giving us your thoughts. What do I like best? Hmm, that’s hard; I guess I’d have to say, your personality that shines through on each of your posts❣ Your blog is a Southern Gem❣

    • Kimberly,
You are such a sweetie! My favorite: “I guess I’d have to say, your personality that shines through on each of your posts”
      Thank you!

  4. Sweetgum is an oxymoron. It is anything BUT sweet when one steps on one of those little critters. “Dadgum” is a more appropriate name for them. That is why we paid a couple thousand dollars to have two gigantic trees removed from our yard. However, the name of your blog is one I will not forget, just like I will never forget how it feels to step on a dadgum ball.

    • Barbara,
You crack me up! My daughter stepped on one of those things, barefooted, this summer. Not a pleasant feeling.

I have heard that it takes about a grand to dig up a tree. That’s unreal!!!

Anyway, thanks so much for stopping by!

Now I’ve just got to figure out how to get my gravitar to work with WordPress.com.

  5. Well yes Mrs Sweet Gum. I am still here. My own Buttercup is getting sick. Tomorrow is our super dapper
Pack day. So keep us in your prayers. I love the colors you chose each picture . I’m excited to start reading on your Sweet Gum Life

    • Dear Mrs. Brackett,
I hope your Buttercup gets better. I’m glad you like the colors and pictures.
      Sending up packing prayers!

  6. This I found in my comments awaiting approval:

“I really like your family area because it’s cool. Can I enter that free stuff contest? I want the kittens.”

My answer: Sorry, Princess Buttercup. You have to be at least 18 years old, and it wouldn’t be fair for close family members to enter into the contest.

    Have you done your homework?

  7. I love the organization of the blog! The headers at the top provide easy shortcuts for perusal through the blog and I especially like the about section that thoroughly explains all about your blog!

  8. Great site, Stephanie! I think it looks wonderful. I love the southern feel to everything. It is the best region of the country, after all! Good luck!

    • Thank you, Robbie! Yes, I think my favorite part about living in the south is that it is in the Bible belt and people are very courteous, for the most part.

    • Thank you, Bette, for stopping by! Good luck in the giveaway, and please keep reading. I’ve got lots of prizes this month!

  9. I am excited about your news! Tell the Queen that I’ll let her win the kittens. Don’t need any pets, other than my Precious, here. There are sweet gum balls on the North side of our house. I LOVE the shade! I think the pecans out there tend to create a better area for land surfing. Wheeeee!

  10. I like the new name – not so much the sweet gums in my yard. Looking forward to reading your writing and seeing the ideas you will share.

    • You’re so sweet, Vonya. Thank you for your kind words!

Yes, we’re trying to figure out how to deal with those sweetgum balls!

  11. Cool giveaway! Everything looks so nice! You’ve done a great job. We have those trees too, ouch! So, I must ask – is it “Roll Tide” or “War Eagle” for you?

    • LOL, my parents and I graduated from UA (not at the same time!) RTR! My younger brother went to AU (black sheep), and my niece is at AU. But my husband and I are big Bama fans! 🙂

Glad you like the giveaway, Grammy Dee! I will be drawing the names as soon as I print them out. Good luck, and thanks for bragging on the blog!
