I had done everything I could to be on time.
I hadn’t been to a HOTCoffee networking meeting in a while, but this time I simply had to be there to hear the guest speaker.
I squeezed into a chair as close to the front row as possible.
Like a wave of positive energy, she came front and center. The room was hushed. I took notes frantically.
The speaker was Dr. Martha Campbell Pullen, and she was there to teach a room full of hopeful entrepreneurs the keys to her success.
Little did I know that my fellow Alabamian was also a University of Alabama graduate. When I found out that she is a fellow-alumna, I may have squealed. Just a little bit.
She got to where she is today by shear grit, determination, from surrounding herself with smart people (her words), and by trusting in the grace of God.
She is definitely a spunky lady. When she was an Alabama cheerleader in 1963, she walked around the stadium at the Orange Bowl and met John F. Kennedy. There’s a photo on the back of her book, G.R.A.C.E., Keys to Entrepreneurship with her hands wiping tears from her face as she gazes up at the President of the United States.
She tells the group of us that she couldn’t get out her name when the president asked. Don’t worry, she finally remembered her name! Her point was this: if this young woman from Scottsboro, Alabama can meet the President of the United States, then “Dreams can come true!”
After the HOTCoffee networking meeting was over, I actually got to meet Dr. Pullen and managed to ask if she would donate one of her books to the blog giveaway. Without another word, the lady who turned a sewing hobby into a million-dollar business pulled a book out of a box and autographed it.
I hope you’ll find it as inspiring as I have!
