The It Girl

You know who I’m talking about.

You see her on Facebook or on the magazine covers in the store.

She’s the It girl, and she has it all together.

She’s the one with the ‘hundred-watt smile. Her kids are always happy and clean, and her husband adores her.

Maybe she’s online plugging their trip to some sunny beach in Florida. It never rains while they’re there.

Hers is an perfect sense of style, both with her home and with her whole family.

That’s the thing: she’s perfect…And she doesn’t really exist.

TV, movies, magazine spreads, and social media can give us a false sense of perfectionism. The photos that don’t make it to Instagram are easily discarded, while people work to put their best face forward. I know I do it, but I hope no one thinks I’ve got it together. I can say most assuredly that I don’t.

In spite of Gram, Twitter, FB, and whatever else, you don’t get to see what’s really going on in the heart of the most put-together It girl.

It’s not a pretty word picture, but Jesus talks about “white-washed tombs” in Matthew 23:27-28:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness (NIV).”

I’m not saying that this is what’s going on with your It girl. She may have the purest heart in the world, but dollars to donuts you do like me and compare your own worst to the It girl’s best.

Not a good idea.

It’s better to be yourself and celebrate the You that God created.

And go with this:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Psalm 139:14 (NIV)”

Cracks in the Heart

The other day, I got in my car and noticed that there was a crack in my windshield. “Ah, nuts,” I thought and drove on my merry way. But when I told Lefty, he said that he didn’t want me to drive the car until we get it fixed. That put my mobility to a… Continue Reading

How Nature Praises God

Trees rustle in Morning’s strong wind. Sway high above, into bright, blue Sky– Pale green against bright blue. Leaves sing their rustling song. Clouds quickly scatter, Until Sky is clear. The Birds sing. The Trees sing. I sing. By: SLR   . This morning is a beautiful spring day. The sky is a clear blue.… Continue Reading

What Makes 16 Years of Marriage Work

Dear Readers, 16 years ago today–June 6, 1998–I married my best friend and the love of my life. His online name is “Lefty.” It seems like yesterday that I was the nervous (terrified, actually!) bride that you see in the picture. You can see the fear in my eyes because I would be making one… Continue Reading
